Victorian Cabinet card photographs

1/12th scale.   The cabinet card was a larger version of the portrait 'carte de visite' or photo calling card popular from the mid 1800s. They were especially developed for portraits and like  cartes de visite  were also mass produced with images of royalty and other celebrities to satisfy the 'collectors market'. Photographs were mounted on a card below which decorative artwork bore the photographers name and location. In many cases the reverse of the card was also highly decorated and gave details of the photographers studio and services. Although cabinet cards  were still produced into the twenties they declined in use after the turn of the century gradually being replaced by picture postcards which were cheaper to produce and easier to post
